What Does the Glass Ceiling Have to Do With Glass?

The word ‘glass’ has many different meanings. In most cases, the word ‘glass’ is used to denote a popular construction product, a raw material used to create windows and other transparent structures. However, glass has deep metaphorical meanings. It is no wonder that the difficulties faced by women in their professional growth were called “the glass ceiling effect”. Architectural textbooks describe various types of glass ceilings; the meaning of glass ceilings was created long before the issue of gender discrimination came into existence. Home Glass Repair Arizona is convinced that the term “glass ceiling” and the word “glass” have much in common – both are transparent, solid, and virtually unbreakable.

The history of the glass ceiling phenomenon dates back to the beginning of the 1980s. The term was first coined in 1987, when Alice Sargent, the author of the Androgynous Manager, said that women in corporate America were bumping themselves on the glass ceiling. Since that moment, the term “glass ceiling” became the central metaphor describing the issue of gender discrimination in organizations. Disproportionately low numbers of women-executives is probably the main symptom of the persistent glass ceiling in America. Despite the growing number of regulations and laws, women are still underrepresented in corporate boards. It seems that laws alone cannot improve the situation. Home Glass Repair Chandler suspects that the roots of the glass ceiling are not legal but cultural and social. The more laws Congress passes the more veiled these forms of gender discrimination become. Women are denied growth opportunities for various reasons, from the lack of appropriate skills to the prevalence of masculine norms in organizations. Thus, the ways to break the glass ceiling must be social and cultural. We at Arizona Glass feel that it is high time for organizations to change their cultures. This is the only way to improve women’s professional position in organizations.
